Studio Leftovers in Purple

About the Work
Part of the Studio Leftovers Series, this cubic sculpture features "artistic waste," or materials generated from the creative process. To create the rich texture shown, dried oil and acrylic paint was collected from the artist's palette, then repurposed onto the surface. In addition to used paint, the "studio leftovers" incorporated into this piece include a purple, latex glove used to protect the artist's hands during the painting process. It also features solid, trapezoidal forms extracted from a fellow artist's plastic palette (see green, orange, yellow, and red mold-like components). The base of purple oil paint is glazed in a subtle green hue on each edge to emphasize the piece's geometry.
About Artistic Waste
As part of her practice, the artist collects and repurposes leftover materials from the art-making process. This “artistic waste” includes dried oil paint scraped from painters' palettes—both thick, goopy balls of oil paint as well as thin, film-like acrylic textures. She repurposes graphite and charcoal pencil shavings, used masking tape, and other found objects such as used paint tubes and paper palettes. Unlike more traditional artistic mediums, artistic waste cannot be purchased or manufactured; it must be generated from past creation. These materials serve as artifacts of the creative process, telling the visual story of artistic pursuit.
