3D Oil Paintings
Olshan's sculptural paintings invite the viewer to navigate an imagined landscape. Abstracted, incongruous staircases orient and disorient the 2 and 3D planes, defying the possibilities of a physical climb. In architecture, staircases are a symbol of physical and symbolic elevation. In this work, they present as impossible, disjointed structures – false pathways to an inaccessible destination.
Together, these works construct an otherworldly spatial logic in which one can “enter” through one composition and “exit” its counterpart. To create these interconnected spaces, the artist re-conceptualize elements of her own work, re-envisioning the source material. The resulting works are linked, but irrational: a section of one composition reappears, cropped and inverted. A whirling skyscape morphs into a small, distressed landscape. Collectively, this body of work creates one interconnected, self-reflexive world.
