Studio Leftovers in Red

About the Work
Part of the Studio Leftovers Series, this cubic sculpture features "artistic waste," or materials generated from the creative process. To create the rich texture shown, dried oil paint was collected from the artist's palette, then repurposed onto the surface. The base of alizarin crimson oil paint is glazed, or layered, on each edge to emphasize the piece's geometry. Found objects, or "studio leftovers" incorporated into the piece include used oil paint tubes, paint caps, and paint brushes.
About Artistic Waste
As part of her practice, the artist collects and repurposes leftover materials from the art-making process. This “artistic waste” includes dried oil paint scraped from painters' palettes—both thick, goopy balls of oil paint as well as thin, film-like acrylic textures. She repurposes graphite and charcoal pencil shavings, used masking tape, and other found objects such as used paint tubes and paper palettes. Unlike more traditional artistic mediums, artistic waste cannot be purchased or manufactured; it must be generated from past creation. These materials serve as artifacts of the creative process, telling the visual story of artistic pursuit.
