Blind Contours
A technique traditionally used to teach fundamental drawing, blind contours require the artist to render an object without looking at their drawing it or picking up their pencil up from the surface. It thus creates one continuous, impromptu line that forces the artist to focus on observation.
These abstract paintings repurpose the blind contour method for abstraction, enabling the artist to generate spontaneous, organic imagery. Primarily using images of plants, flowers, and other organic objects as reference material, these line drawings were superimposed directly onto the canvas without editing. Olshan then reacted to these immediate marks, and integrated them into the visual language of the painting.
